November 11th is Veteran’s Day, which is a time we honor those who have dedicated their time in service to our country. This year, we are hoping to use it as an opportunity to meet more Veterans on the yoga mat throughout the St. Louis area!
Since 2016, Yoga Buzz has been working with VA St. Louis Healthcare System to support the growth of their yoga programming to Veterans. These days, their yoga classes as part of Whole Health are packed – to the point where our friends at Whole Health are looking to provide affordable, accessible options for their Veterans to practice yoga out in the community, separate of the VA’s facilities.
We are eager to support the creation of a bridge between the VA’s yoga classes and the vast resources available throughout the St. Louis yoga community. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but we hope it will be a helpful start.
Tips for finding a yoga studio, teacher, and class to support your practice
Every studio, teacher, and class is different. If you’re looking for something specific, or have specific needs to support your practice, call or email the studio in advance. Not every space will meet the needs of every person, so it’s okay to do a little “shopping” beforehand – and it’s okay if you decide to try something new if the class, teacher, or space doesn’t feel supportive to you.
As with any physical practice, check in with your doctor prior to starting a new exercise regimen. There are different specialized styles of yoga that might better support certain diagnoses, such as Trauma-Informed Yoga for those managing PTSD symptoms, or Accessible Yoga and Chair Yoga for those with limited mobility. Need some suggestions for yoga classes? Feel free to email us at [email protected], and we will do our best to point you in the best direction!
